King of Fighters SHMUP in the Works

What do the characters in King of Fighters do between fighting titles?  Apparently, they fly around and throw projectiles from their hands.

Maybe SNK got a bit jarred at how successful Street Fighter 4 has become, and are now resorting to sticking their characters in different game genres?  Whatever the reason, they are now flying and dodging air projectiles as deftly as those ships in many popular SHMUPs (Shoot ‘em Ups) in the game King of Fighters: SkyStage.   Looks to be an XBox Live Arcade download, so it’s not a total commitment to move the game franchise to another category.  I’d hate to see a King of Fighters kart racer.

    They were probably looking for a small download footprint game, and this is something they can crank out fast. Either that or they are jealous of Touhou.

    I know, but flying? It’s just weird. It’s like taking Mario, putting a doctor’s coat on him, and starring him in a puzzle game.
