Food of K-On! Episode #2
|
Tea in the club room looks like a feast of sweets courtesy of Mugi-chan! Along with tea, Yui looks like she’s having a mango mousse cake. Mugi has a strawberry shortcake (recipe (J)) in front of her. Ritsu has a some red berry topped cheesecake slice. And Mio has a plain cheesecake slice on her plate. It’s interesting to see each girl’s choice. Don’t they sort fo match their personalities? In this episode we learn that people are always giving Mugi-chan’s family sweets.
On the tray from left to right, it looks like 3 choux cremes, 1 strawberry/raspberry mousse cake, an unknown poundcake maybe, and a plain New York style cheesecake. On the individual plate in the bottom fight corner is a strawberry shortcake. Choux cremes are also known as creampuffs in the US. Here’s a Japanese recipe and one in English. Cheesecakes in Asia tend not to be as dense as New York Style cheesecakes, but both are delicious and easy to make.
It looks like the lunch boxes consisted of cherry tomatoes, orange wedges, and chestnut/marron cakelettes (recipe (Japanese)),
egg salad and ham sandwiches, with little skewers of tomatoes and cucumbers. |
Let’s see what K-On! (

I think that is strawberry shortcake.
I should change that. You’re right, in Japan, they call it Strawberry Shortcake. In the US, shortcake often refers to a biscuit-like cake, rather than a genoise (or sponge cake) base.
