Saimoe 2009 Update

kagaminovaI am usually pretty good about tracking the famous Saimoe Competition, but this year I have been a little behind. For those of you unfamiliar with the competition, it is a 2ch battle royale of the moe characters of the past year. Voting is done in a number of elimination rounds, culminating in a showdown between two characters for the most moe of the year. Past winners have been dominated by Rozen Maiden and Nanoha, but KyoAni has made a powerful showing in the past few years. Last year’s victor was Hiiragi Kagami. Stationmaster’s Happy Victories:
Okazaki Ushio – Just seeing her win makes me cry…
Alicia Melchiott – I don’t think she’s going to survive the next round, but I’m glad to see her make it this far. I blame off-model animation in earlier episodes. Plus the show is just getting to…oh…no spoilers… =)
Takei Hisa – Hisa! Hisa! Hisa!
Minami Kana beats Akiyama Mio – Aiya! Talk about hard choice! I love Mio dearly…but compared to the Doumo Kana…sorry, just no comparison. “I AM BOSS!”

Stationmaster’s Surprise upsets:
Hiiragi Kagami lost to Asahina Mikuru – This was a tough one, but with over 736 votes, Kagami didn’t have a chance with only 558 votes.
Izumi Konata lost to Shindou Chihiro – Hmm…tough call. I’d have to say that I bet Konata is a fan of Chihiro, and has probably played all of the Minori games. LOL!
Tsumugi lost to Momoko – Yikes, a tough one. Both rank high on the yuri-meter, which is a pretty powerful factor this season. I probably would have gone with Tsumugi…but her takuan eyebrows probably killed it for her. Momoko’s stealth abilities FTW. Ron!
Aoba Tsumugi lost to Yuno – Most of these are tough calls…but I thought Tsumugi earned extra moe from her stint at the maid cafe. Yuno is cute however. The scary thing is they are the same age…man the lolification of anime scares me.
Haruka lost to Saginomiya Isumi – Well, not as big a Hayate fan as most so that probably clouds me on this one. Plus we are not talking about the original…Asread’s bizzare renditions of the characters probably accounts for the weakness of Minami-ke in the overall voting…BRING BACK DOUMU!
Macross Girls (Sheryl, Ranka and Klan Klein) lost to Hayate no Gotoku/Ef/Toradora! – Just goes to show how Macross is more of an international powerhouse than a Japanese one…and that the title infrequent appearance means modern fans are not as attached to the franchise as the younger fans.
Evangelion Girls lost to anything recent – Same effect as with Macross. Guess even with the movies, Eva’s comeback is pretty much only for Evangelion fans…
Ryuumonbuchi Touka lost to Maria – Tough call here…and both had high scores with Maria having 748 over Touka’s 611. Poor poor Touka…again… =)
Miyanaga Teru – She hasn’t even shown up except in a few flashbacks! She is scary however…

Comments:
Gonzo makes a good showing this year with Saki and Strike Witches, as does KyoAni with Clannad, Haruhi and K-On! JC Staff sneaks a few in, and the fan favorites still rally the fans.
